This week using alcohol inks and PaperArtsy
Emma Godfrey's latest stamps I've gone
with a love theme as it's my other
half and my anniversary.
I've used a couple different techniques
to create a background on a canvas board and
the design details. I had a lot of fun and
did a lot of experimenting along the way.
Using alcohol inks and water is very addictive
and then I started playing with Yupo Paper
and wow you really need this paper, it is
awesome. I've added some notes I thought
you may find useful along the way. There
are lots of steps but it shows you really
can mix it up, use different techniques
with two main ingredients. Hope you like
this post, it's rather a long tutorial this week.
So to create the background
on the canvas board.
Add white gesso in a thick layer over the
whole board leaving some uneven
ridges visible. Dry.
Then using an old plastic container fill with
water, couple of inches plenty. Drop in your
chosen colours of alcohol inks. A few drops
Experiment, have spare pieces of paper
or card to try out colours and different
combinations of ink colours before going
on to the canvas panel. You'll get
a feel for how they react.
Then slide your canvas panel into the
water and straight out. If you want a deeper
colour like I did, dry with heat tool and
repeat the steps. I did it three times.
And there's no need to change to
Just a note - This method produces lighter
colours than just using alcohol inks on
their own.
Dry then spritz blending solution over the
board for a tiny speckled look. Again do
it once, dry and you can always do another
spritz. If you load the blender on it the
colours will just end up all blending together
defeating the water colour marble look.
When all dry and I used my heat tool gently,
use Decoart Media Satin Varnish to seal
the background. I did this in three thin
layers. Using the brush to paint it on one
way across, then the opposite way, then
back to first way. This builds up an even
layer and gets eliminates the brush marks
usually left behind. Unless you want that
look. It dries quickly and is a favourite
Next, get your stamps at the ready.
Use the smaller images to create a border and
stamp LOVE bottom corner with Jet Black
Stazon ink, stamp with Midnight Blue
Stazon, the trio of hearts all over the board
and then fill in with the x x x stamp using
Royal Purple Stazon ink.
Using some
gesso coloured very pale lilac with ink,
paint around parts of the hearts to make
them stand out. Use a white gel pen to
highlight LOVE and dots around the border.
To finish the canvas board itself, mix
Decoart Media Texture Sandpaste with
Indigo Alcohol Ink and spread through
Spinning Tops Stencil. When dry rub
over this with silver gilding wax.
To make the features.
Create three alcohol ink backgrounds in
contrasting colours so they really pop.
First background piece is made using
the alcohol ink in water technique on watercolour
card. The second piece is made on Yupo
Paper simply dropping the inks on to the
paper, letting them spread, take your
time then flick blending solution onto
it using an old toothbrush.
The third piece and my favourite is again
on Yupo Paper.
Place Tando Crocodile Mask
on top, tape edges to secure if liked. Then
add droplets of alcohol inks into the spaces.
It does seep underneath but still
comes out just great.
I did use cling film scrunched on top of yet
inks, it worked but was taking
too long for me to dry.
TIPS. HANDLE THE YUPO PAPER AS LITTLE
AT POSSIBLE FINGER MARKS ETC MAY SHOW.
IF YOU'RE NOT LIKING YOUR RESULTS YOU
CAN RUB IT BACK WITH BLENDING SOLUTION
OR RUBBING ALCOHOL ETC. IT WILL STAIN
THE CARD BUT YOU CAN START AGAIN.
I DID THIS A FEW TIMES ON ONE PIECE
AND IT STILL WORKED.
Let these dry.
Then stamp hearts using Black
Archival ink and words onto them and cut out.
Attach these to canvas with foam pads.
Embellish with silver heart brads
with wings snipped away.
Run around the edge of the board
with black marker to finish.
