3D Bloom and Texture

Hallo Everyone!

How're you today? 

Still enjoying the holiday?

Or are you back to the grind and the

holiday rapidly becoming a dim 

and distant memory

Never mind, here is Craftyfield

with a project that is sure to

set the mojo going

 I started with the Weft and Fabric Numbers stencil by Carabelle 

and Memory inks and obtained a lovely soft effect. 

I carried on stencilling with the Chicken wire Reversed Stencil.

For the next step I used sprays with the Shedded stencil (DecoArt), 

in Cobalt blue and Precious Stone.

Time for the pastes, here I used black gesso 

with the same Carabelle stencil having 

obliterated my previous stencilling with the spray! 

I also used Grunge paste with Pixillated.

As a project progresses I reassess the balance of colours 

and, if I find something not working, I try and change it. 

I didn't like the white in the background so 

I knocked it back with Distress inks. 

I then added Grunge paste through the Inspiration stencil. 

You'll see that the "Inspire" has also changed colour 

in the final photo, simply because it was hard to see 

against the background

My focal point is a Tando frame against that Inspire word 

and I painted it with Imagination Crafts Starlight Paints 

(Dark Orchid, Mint and Platinum)

3 Butterflies of different sizes provide the finishing touches.

 They are from a Crafty Individuals set, and I used 

both line and solid versions of the images, 

line with black ink and solid with blue and oranges dye inks.

In this picture you get an idea of how much shine the

 Starlight paint gives when hit by direct sunlight.

Around the House

Today Karen Gist is using an item

 found in many houses: 

shaving foam

Here's what she does:

Shaving Foam printing can be very messy 

but you can get some fantastic results!  

No need to spend out too much at all, 

I have used a really cheap one.  

Though as it is smelly choose one you like!!! 

I sprayed it on my glass mat and then added 

2 colours of the Deco Art Media Misters.  

Using a pokey tool I drew lines up and down.

Press the white card on gently and lift.

Leave about a minute then wipe off the foam.

Don't leave it too long or the foam starts to dry.

Here is another colour way that I tried using the same sprays.

You can see here that I just let the ink 'drop' rather than spray it.

This is how the blue/magenta printing turned out.

It does spread a bit when you wipe it down but

 I like that effect.

This is a second lift off the foam.

You can get many prints in one session.

This colourway isn't as vibrant as the other one 

but is still useable.

The card feels lovely and soft!

I decided to use the paler of the blue/magenta prints for this card

 so that I could stamp onto it.

I stencilled the face with the matching Media Line Acrylic

and added some script stamping and some doodling.

The background is white card stamped with a crackle stamp

The orange/yellow print has been stamped on and some

doodling added.

I used scrap of the blue/magenta left overs to

add a bit of zing

Triplets - Neil Walker

Good Morning everyone,

Welcome to a busy week here on the blog.

We are at the last week of January 

already.  Goodness how time flies!

So what have we got for you this 

week, well, we thought the

DT were in need of a bit of repetition, 

three times in fact so we gave 

them the word Triplets!

And the details were.....

A design cut into 3 or a series of 3 designs.

Well, this is what Neil has made,

a fantastic project with so much

work in it....

For my Triple I selected 3 door plates from Andy 

Skinner's and glued them together along with

 cutting some chipboard strips to raise up 

the top and bottom sections

When dry I painted them as seen with DecoArt Fluid
 Acrylic in four colours.

When they were dry I covered everything with
 a layer of Titan Buff.

I scrubbed back areas to reveal the colours,
 covered everything with Antiquing Cream and
 wiped back to give layers of faded distress.

Using one of my masks and Gold Interference
 paint I added a little subtle patterned shimmer
 detail. Then everything was sealed
with spray sealer.

I created a base board from thick A4 chipboard,
 burlap and crackle paste.

When dry I coloured with paint.

Further detail was added with Seth Apter stamps,
 embossing ink and Frantage powder.

Then the fun began. I added my door plates
 to the board and rummaged through my
 embellishment drawers to add metal accents.

I love these old style keys and ornate
 metal lock plate.

Opposites week - Neil

Hi, 
Here's Neil's version on an AJ page today. Neil chose COLOUR vs BLACK and WHITE. Same stamp and design but the difference the colour makes is rather striking, don't you think? 
Love the little hiding place for the journaling.

Each page was done the same way with Tissue Tape, PaperArtsy and Kaisercraft stamps. The stamping on the B and W page was done with white Distress Paint and Black Archival ink on the colour page.  

The colour on this page was done with Distress paints too. I used Distress Markers to colour the character. 

To add a bit of interest to the page I used a mask to add some cogs to the edges of the page with Black Soot Distress Ink.

And, just because I wanted to add an element of surprise; each page has some hiding places for journaling.

Inspired by a painting... Karen

Hi, 
We are starting a very different week from what we normally do. This was Neil's suggestion when we were working on the new planning and I loved it immediately as I have always loved art and paintings. 
We have asked the DT to create a sample of their choice inspired by a famous painting. 
As I write this, I only have Karen's sample which you can see below, but I am really looking forward to seeing all the other samples. 
Karen chose Susan Seddon Boulet 's paintings as inspiration.

I have chosen to take inspiration from the late  Susan Seddon Boulet's beautiful paintings mainly because I just cannot stop looking at them!!!!  

When you look closely there are images within images.  

She used animals a lot so I have adapted the idea of that for a journal page called 'The Hunter' .

I used Pebeo Studio Acrylics throughout starting with numbers 42 Phthalocyanin Emerald, 33 Naphtol Carmine, 49 Primary Cyan and 27 Yellow Ochre brushed over the background.  

When that way dry, I added a thin layer of Gesso to tone it down a little and to add texture.  Using Versafine in Smokey Gray and white paper, I stamped the Crafty Individuals birds, butterflies and rabbit (367, 389 and 372) plus a fish from Paperrtsy Hotpicks (HP1202).  

I watered down the same paints to colour them in. I then lightly drew a cat and stuck the creatures in appropriate places before colouring in the cat with the Primary Cyan, slightly watered down. 

Before I cut it out I went over with an Inktense Pencil to highlight the fur and shadows.  Back to the journal page...I stencilled some Naphtol Carmine through Andy Skinners Burned Rubber mask before attaching the cat.

Sketch week - Karen

Hi,
A different approach to the sketch today with Karen who altered a canvas using Tando Creative cogs and PaperArtsy paints

Using PaperArtsy Fresco Paint in Guacamole and Cheesecake, I covered my rectangular canvas and dried with a heat tool. (Always dry between layers to stop the paints 'muddying') Then, using my finger I smeared on PaperArtsy Ice Blue and Claret. Using Andy Skinners Mask (Burning Rubber) and more Claret I stencilled along the bottom before adding Gesso with my brayer to 'dull' it all down a little. Going back to the mask I stencilled in Ice Blue down one side. I have used Tando Creative Heart Cogs and painted them up in the same colours, using a stipple brush around the edges. For the children I have stencilled through Andy Skinners Mask (6x6 Children) using a mix of Claret and Guacamole onto white card, then cut them out. I tore a dictionary definition of children out and coloured it before glueing in place behind the children.

Music week - Guest Designer Lina McDermott

Hope you had a great (crafting) weekend.
Told you the other day that Lina would be back for a second week, and here she is with a beautiful, bright and fun card to illustrate our new theme this week: MUSIC!
Our DT has been very creative as you will discover throughout the week and made some fantastic samples to inspire you.

Let's start with Lina. Here's how she made her card.

When I heard that the theme for this week was to be Music I immediately thought of Andy Skinner’s Hippy Chick stencil.

I thought disco and dance and these girls are brilliant, just right for this.

To start, I used Studio multi medium matte to stick down Tim Holtz's Melange tissue wrap onto a 20x20 cm canvas board.  I didn't have the Composer tissue wrap (this would be ideal – on my shopping list of must haves…) but this is an amazing product you can tear or cut areas that you want and create great collages. 

 I then painted another layer of the gel medium over the top of the tissue wrap and dried this with a heat tool.  When dry, I painted a thin wash of gesso over the surface and wiped off any excess with a baby wipe so that I could still see the tissue underneath. I dried this with the heat tool.

I wanted the girls to look as though they were on a dance floor and so to create this effect I drew a grid to give the artwork depth and perspective.

I selected an area of my drawing and cut this out. I glued down pieces of black card to give a chequered floor look.   I stuck this to the canvas with double-sided tape. After I had done this I thought that an alternative to this would be to mask off areas and stipple through with paint.   

My canvas now had a very monotone look to it, which I liked because the girls would be in colour and the focal point of the artwork. I sprayed the Dylusions inks through the Hippy Chick stencil onto white card and when dry I cut out the girls.  

Every disco has to have a glitter ball and so I made mine from a circle cut from white card. I drew a grid and then covered it with small pieces of foil. I painted black acrylic over the top and wiped this back with a baby wipe. 

 The words were cut from the new Tim Holtz Block Talk die.

All that was left to do was to position everything and stick it all down.

Back to one of my favourite days: Saturday Savers.
Today, Gio chose to upcycle a CD holder as well as make a matching card. Gio used Andy Skinner's masks as well as Cosmic Shimmer misters

 I laid some torn book pages on the craft sheet and I started to spray them using Cosmic Shimmer Misters and The Crafters Workshop template - Gears, Tando Masks - Andy Skinner: Burning rubber and Tando Masks - Andy Skinner: Have Your Say. I stamped randomly using IndigoBlu stamps: Circle dot background and some text from IndigoBlu stamps: Music hall. I glued and cut the book pages to the CD holder. I added some male embellishments like a wooden ruler.

For the one layer card: I sprayed some Cosmic Shimmer Misters through the Crafters Workshop template-Gears, then I stamped randomly using IndigoBlu stamps: Circle dot background.

I added the sentiment stamping from the plate IndigoBlu: Music hall using Archival Jet Black ink pad.
